January 1, 2000 it was predicted that there would be disasters from anything that relied on computers using a two digit year code in the programming when the date changed from 12/31/99 to 1/1/00 because this could be represented as the year 1900.

Before the Internet Bulletin Board Systems were the social media of choice. These used dial-up modems and serial connections before TCP/IP. No need for DNS.

You could do live chat, download files,freeware games and many other options.

There is still a following for BBS systems and these would be a great alternate to the WWW.
